Drag Racing 101
Breakout: refers to a race car running quicker than the driver has predicted. The driver's prediction is called the dial-in and is posted on the race car. The driver who breaks out loses the race unless his or her opponent has committed a more serious foul, such as a red-light or crossing the centerline of the drag strip.
Burnout: The process of spinning the rear tires in water to heat and clean them before a run for better traction.
Christmas Tree: An electronic starting device between the lanes on the starting line. It displays a calibrated-light countdown for each driver.
Elapsed Time (e.t.): The time it takes a drag-race vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line.
Methanol: Pure methyl alcohol is the fuel used in Top Alcohol Dragsters, Top Alcohol Funny Cars, and even some Jr. Dragsters.
Nitro-methane ("nitro"): is the result of a chemical reaction between nitric acid and propane. Made specifically as a fuel for drag racing. Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use nitro methane.
Nitrous Oxide ("nitrous," "N2O"): When injected into an engine under pressure, nitrous oxide gives the engine a sudden boost in power by introducing more oxygen into the fuel mixture. Nitrous oxide is not allowed in any NHRA category except Pro Mod (exhibition) and some E.T. bracket classes.
Reaction Time: The time it takes a driver to react to the green starting light on the Christmas Tree, measured in thousandths of a second. A perfect reaction time is .000.
Red Light: When a race car leaves the starting line too soon - before the green light, or "go" signal - it activates the red light on the Christmas Tree and the driver has automatically lost the race.

FREE Parking at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway

It's worth mentioning that General Parking is FREE at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. If two or more people are heading to LVMS for the NHRA Nevada Nationals, renting a car will be a cheaper alternative than riding the shuttle.

If you plan to take the car rental route during the NHRA Nevada Nationals, here are a few things to keep in mind.
1. Most Las Vegas hotels do charge for parking. Check first with your hotel for any parking fees.
2. If you plan to park at the LVMS, you will need to get there as early as possible to avoid traffic. Also expect traffic when leaving the Speedway after the race.
3. After you park, make a note of where you parked your car. Write down the lot number, take a photo and note the route you walked from your car to the venue. (trust me, you will need this information after the event.)

Arrival from the Las Vegas Strip or Downtown Las Vegas area

There are two ways to get to LVMS from the Strip and downtown area. You can take the I-15 or Las Vegas Blvd. The largest parking lots with easiest access are on the north side of the Speedway (Blue Lot) and are easily accessible via I-15. Additional parking is located on the west and south sides (Brown Lot), accessible via Las Vegas Blvd.

Taking the I-15
Take I-15 North to exit 54 (Speedway Blvd). As you approach exit 54 on the I-15, there are 3 northbound lanes towards Las Vega Motor Speedway, pick the one with the least amount of cars all the way to Exit 54. Once on the exit 54 ramp, use the far-left lane or the center lane to travel straight across Speedway Blvd into Blue Lot.
Hint - Vehicles in the shoulder lane will be checked for parking passes at the end of the ramp. If you do not have a parking pass, use the center lane or left-hand lane.

Taking Las Vegas Blvd
Take Las Vegas Blvd north to Entry #1 for access into Red lot or Entry #3 for access into Brown Lot.

NHRA Nevada Nationals Rideshare pick-up/drop-off location
If you plan to attend NHRA Nevada Nationals using Uber or Lyft, for quick entrance and exit from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, head to the Uber Zone by following signs to the dedicated Uber drop-off lot.
